A Caregiver in
Her Golden Years
As Singapore’s population ages, a growing number of seniors are finding themselves in an unexpected role: caring for another senior loved one.
At 80 years old, Mdm Annie is one of them. She is the primary caregiver to her 91-year-old husband, Mr Kong, in the studio apartment they call home.
Like many spouses, Mdm Annie simply stepped in when her husband needed help. But caregiving became increasingly difficult as she began facing health challenges of her own. Chronic back pain, mobility limitations, and severe sciatic nerve pain made everyday tasks physically exhausting. Yet she continued helping her husband with showering, changing clothes, and other daily activities because there was no one else to do it.
When Mdm Annie was referred to CWA’s HomeAssist service in July 2025, she finally received the support she needed. Assistance with light housekeeping, grocery errands, and elder-sitting gave her something she had not had in a long time: the opportunity to take a break.
Today, she is able to attend church twice a month, knowing her husband is safe and cared for while she is away.
Mdm Annie’s story is a reminder that caregivers can be seniors too. While they devote themselves to caring for their loved ones, they often face their own physical and emotional challenges. With the right support, caregivers like Mdm Annie can continue caring for the people they love while also caring for themselves.
